Frequently Asked Questions from Indianapolis Families
When do we set up support?
That’s completely up to you! Majority of the time parents like to book at least 3-4 months before their EDD, but some parents schedule a phone call when the reality of not sleeping sets in after baby has already made their arrival. It’s recommended to reach out sooner than later if you’re set on wanting the support— it mostly depends on calendar availability!
what time of the day/night do services take place?
For nighttime care, the sweet spot is from 9pm-7am (10 hours). A shorter or longer shift can take place if desired. For daytime, a minimum of 4 hour shifts takes place anytime from 8am-2pm. On average, 4-6 hour shifts are wanted the most during the day! This allows enough time for a nap and shower for mom, as well as completing small household tidying tasks so you can wake up to a refreshed space.
Which package should I book?
Packaged hours come in 100, 250, & 400 hours. If you already know you want 3+ months worth of support, it’s recommended you book the 400 hour package. If you’re not positive you’d like more than 10 nights of help, it’s recommended to book the 100 hour package. If you find you want more time than that, you can extend your package if availability allows! There are no packages for daytime care.
If I book overnight services, where will my doula sleep?
For overnight services, your assigned Doula is allowed to lay down/sleep once baby is asleep. Typically the best set-up for these services is having your Doula set up their space within a guest room, with baby in their bassinet in the same space. If you do not have a guest room open, we are happy to be on a mattress/day bed/air mattress in the nursery. Our only ask is to not be in a common area (living room, etc) during overnight shifts.
What types of duties does light housekeeping include?
During a daytime shift, you can find baby laundry cleaned & folded, bottles/pump parts washed & sanitized, countertops wiped, cleaned dishes put away, etc. Sometimes just the ease of the mental load of knowing these things are completed can make the world of a difference. During overnight care, you can expect bottles/pump parts washed and sterilized and baby laundry washed, dried, and folded before your Doula leaves!
Can I still nurse if my doula is here overnight?
Absolutely! Baby gets brought to you in your warm bed if that’s how you want feedings to be handled! Some moms like to pump throughout the night and provide pumped milk for us to take care of feedings. Burping, diapering, & rocking back to sleep all happens by us as you drift back to sleep yourself. If baby is formula fed or a combination of both, we handle the feedings so you can get the much needed sleep that you deserve. All ways of feeding are supported here!
what’s the difference between a night nanny & an overnight postpartum doula?
The biggest difference between these two roles is the training, certification, and scope of practice. Most families seeking overnight care are under the impression that both roles are formally trained which isn’t always true! A night nanny is typically caring only for the newborn, while a Postpartum Doula is professionally trained in caring for the postpartum mom, family, and household. Postpartum Doulas often have more of a whole family approach and complete household tasks like laundry and tidying up, which are also part of their job description!
